If someone does not sleep through the night and you ask the person what time they wake up, 9 times out of 10 times they will say 3 o’clock in the morning. In 5-Element Acupuncture Theory, there are 12 energies at work in the body called Officials. Each Official has a 2-hour window when it is at its peak. The Liver Official is at its peak from 1-3 a.m. From 3-5 a.m., the Lung Official is at its peak. The Officials have many qualities associated with them. The Liver Official is associated with that part of us which comes from the heavens. It is responsible for our vision, our dreams and imagination. At 3 a.m., there is a transition from this state to the more earthy part of us that is driven by desire and impulse and is associated with the Lung Official.
